because we had michael bloomberg, mayor of new york city, on "meet the press" last week. he said they are not that powerful. it is -- they are just -- ed rendell, former governor of pennsylvania. he got elected three times and said they are a piper tiger. >> i agree with the mayor. i said this for a very long time. the myth of the power of the nra is much greater than the actual power of the nra. you have to remember in -- talking about grover norquist and pledge or nra and -- their views, and -- you know, there are a lot of members of congress who are ideologically lined with the views of the organization. less about what the nra can do to them than they agree on most issues. they are getting that support. but if you go out and speak clearly to your constituents about what your views are on the issues and -- about revoking second amendment rights, really only talking about common sense reforms, i think most people would agree with you and most of your constituents, republican, sxind democrats would agree. >> we will be talking about this with jon meacham in office politi

i grew up in the city of detroit, i saw a man murdered right in front of me, shot in the head and died in front of me. and for the next 26 years of my life, i never spoke about the incident. so while our country supports the families of the victims, i also want us to continue to provide love and support to those who physically survived that incident. >> representative clarke, i'm so sorry you had to experience that. it is clear that is something that has not left you. will never leave you. how often do you think about that? >> i think it's the fact that i chose not to remember it, for more than two decades of my life, that if i had -- if i could have just spoken to someone about it afterward. i think that's one reason why i chose public life, because i couldn't save that man as he was dying in front of me, but i felt if i maybe i could redeem myself by helping other people. >> so -- >> that's been decades ago, in any event, i would like to focus on the issue at hand here. we as policymakers, but we as a country need to address the underlying causes of this violence, and more than just

i'm in good company here at the manhattan mall in new york city, exactly where the crowds are building at this hour. also all around the country. as you mentioned, 17 million people will still be shopping between now and christmas eve. that's a pretty good chunk if you think about it. on average they're expected to spend around $750. we've talked to some shoppers along the way. some of they will said that the fiscal cliff is sort of on their minds. but they're taking it in stride today. a lot of people have a very relaxed atmosphere to be in. but tomorrow could be a different story. of course that really last-minute rush and crush, mad dash to pick up those gifts on that christmas eve. many of the stores are trying to accommodate those last-minute shoppers, those procrastinators we're talking about, including, you know, just the last-minute few people like myself that's just wrapping up a few gifts or the people that are just getting started. macy's, toys 'r' us, and a couple other stores are staying open around the clock between now and christmas eve. so, alex, there's plenty of time.

every day, a city that has outlawed guns but still has a very high crime rate, and the husband of a public schoolteacher, i just wanted to see my wife and two kids as quickly as possible and hug them and know that they're okay. like all other parents, i think, in the country, including the president felt when we heard the news yesterday. >> well, i can echo that. i have two children and i hugged them both last night. all three of us were crying just at the loss of innocence and the horrific nature of all of this. believe me, i couldn't get close enough to them. but jimmy, where do you think the tipping point is now? where is it that we might all come to agreement on this issue? >> i think the president's going to be strong on this issue. frankly there were grumblings prior to the campaign that were very quiet about the white house pushing a gun control agenda in his second term if he won. well, here we are. the question becomes, what happens in the house and what happens in the senate. let's talk about the senate. i've never worked in the house. i don't know how that chamber really works.
